Volunteers are our backbone

As with many organizations we rely on the generosity of volunteers to assist us in the daily operation & delivery of our services here at the 139 Club. We currently have around 23 volunteers who come in on a regular basis & are involved in manning our reception area, assisting in the kitchen, laundering our sheets & towels, assisting with donation pickups & sorting of items & also with our information technology & marketing needs.

We also from time to time are fortunate enough to have a number of corporate & community groups come in to volunteer their time & resources to assist in areas such as cleaning, painting & helping within the kitchen.

The 139 club values highly the contributions from all our volunteers & we would not be able to operate without them so a

BIG THANK YOU TO YOU ALL !!!

Our communities’ kitchen

It’s 8.30AM and there are scrambled eggs, freshly cooked bacon, oven-roasted tomatoes and French toast.  Some mornings there are sausages and home-made spaghetti, pancakes and even bubble and squeak (always a favourite) and all for $2.  For those who prefer cereal, there is Weet-Bix or Corn Flakes and Porridge.  This is breakfast at the 139 Club.

Hearty, hot soup is served free all day and thanks to the generosity of local bakeries, bread for dipping and dunking. The kitchen is always busy and the dining room always bustling.

At 11.45AM lunch is served.  Casseroles, curries and pasta dishes; home-made pies, quiches and roasts, these are some of the menu items available and the price is very affordable at $3 per overflowing plate.  There are rumours that the meals are even quite tasty and the staff are friendly and smiling.  This pleases the kitchen staff very much.

As the day is winding down at 2PM platters of sweet buns and scrolls appear for afternoon tea, Patches our brave club mascot will indulged in feline wanders about the courtyard, watching pigeons and receiving loving pats from the kind people that access the 139 Club Inc .

Yummo Petite waffles

Waffles

As the temperatures continue to hover in the cool to cold range, Brisbane’s homeless community were among the first to experience the delicacy of a new range of authentic Belgium waffles on Thursday 16th July) at 139 Club’s weekly free lunch. Developed to be just like authentic Belgium waffles found at stalls and cafes dotted throughout Brussels, Petite Waffles will be some of the fare being dished up on the menu to around 100 to 150 hungry homeless individuals from Brisbane’s inner city areas who attend this week’s lunch at the day centre for the homeless. Petite Waffles, which have a wide variety of flavors, are produced using the finest imported goods such as waffle irons and pearl sugar and are set to open their first CBD retail store in September.

Tough economic times have hit our day centre for the homeless hard this year but a donation such as this from business owners creating a high end quality food product will certainly bring a smile to our lunch patrons. Petite Waffles’ co-owner, Edward Gainer wants to help build awareness about the importance of supporting the homeless during difficult economic times. “Waffles are definitely a comfort food and we are proud to be able to put them on 139 Club’s lunch time menu and support our local community,” Mr Gainer said.“The disadvantaged are often overlooked in tough times yet it is now they need our help more than ever as demand for services from 139 Club increases,” he said.
